Thermodynamics of radiation-balanced lasing

چکیده

Athermal lasers dispose of their waste heat in the form of spontaneous fluorescence (i.e., by laser cooling) to avoid warming the medium. The thermodynamics of this process is discussed both qualitatively and quantitatively from the point of view of the first and second laws. The steady-state optical dynamics of an ytterbium-doped KGd(WO4)2 fiber is analyzed as a model radiation-balanced solid-state laser. A Carnot efficiency for all-optical amplification is derived in terms of the energy and entropy transported by the pump, fluorescence, and laser beams. This efficiency is compared with the performance of the model system. © 2003 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 140.3320, 140.6810, 000.6850.

Radiation thermodynamics with applications to lasing and fluorescent cooling

Laser cooling of bulk matter uses thermally assisted fluorescence to convert heat into light and can be interpreted as an optically pumped laser running in reverse. Optical pumping in such devices drives the level populations out of equilibrium. Nonthermal radiative energy transfers are thereby central to the operation of both lasers and luminescent coolers. A thermodynamic treatment of their l...

Mid-infrared Lasing Induced by Noise

We demonstrate that external noise can play a constructive role in a laser diode, inducing coherent mid-infrared radiation. Depending on noise intensity, the induced lasing can be either unimode or mulitimode. The coherence of the radiation in each mode reaches its maximum at an optimal noise intensity that differs depending on the mode. The phenomenon can therefore be classified as a multiple ...

Observation of emission from chaotic lasing modes in deformed microspheres: displacement by the stable orbit modes

By combining detailed imaging measurements at different tilt angles with simulations of ray emission from prolate deformed lasing micro-droplets, we conclude that the probability density for the lasing modes in a three-dimensional dielectric microcavity must reside in the chaotic region of the ray phase space. In particular, maximum emission from such chaotic lasing modes is not from tangent ra...

Grating integrated single mode microring laser.

Microring and microdisk lasers are potential candidates for small footprint, low threshold in-plane integrated lasers; however, they exhibit multimode lasing spectra and bistability. Here, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel approach for achieving single mode lasing in microring lasers. Our approach is based on increasing the radiation loss of all but one of the reso...

Structure formation and generalized second law of thermodynamics in some viable f(R)-gravity models

We investigate the growth of matter density perturbations as well as the generalized second law (GSL) of thermodynamics in the framework of f(R)-gravity. We consider a spatially flat FRW universe filled with the pressureless matter and radiation which is enclosed by the dynamical apparent horizon with the Hawking temperature. For some viable f(R) models containing the Starobinsky, Hu-Sawicki, Exp...
